Ballpoint Pens use an oil based ink. This makes the refills long lasting, and able to write on a variety of surfaces, including shiny or damp paper. Many brands offer a gel refill that fits their ballpoint pens. Gel ink is water based, and smoother to write with. However, the refills are not as long lasting, and will not write on as wide a variety of surfaces.

Fisher Space Pens use a highly specialised ink, allowing them to write in zero gravity, upside down, under water and in extreme heat or cold.
