Curtis The Great Race 87/400

The New York Times and LeMatins, a French daily newspaper, arranged a road race from New York to Paris on February 12, 1908. Six cars began the race; the Thomas Flyer from the U.S. finished first, Germany's Protos second and Italy's Brixia Zust took third place.
2008 marked the 100th Anniversary of this historic race around the world, and Curtis Australia captured this significant event in a handcrafted commemorative fountain pen, The Great Race.
The cap is engraved with the three winning cars together with their distinctive radiators, each panel framed by a swirling cartouche. With miniature spark plug and wrench as well as the sign written Thomas Flyer badge, the cap features laurel bands and a panelled detail to the clip. The barrel features the Statue of Liberty and Eiffel Tower against the race route map. The flags of the four competing nations are positioned to either side of the laurel edged shield and hidden amongst all the detail are motoring goggles and a crank handle and glove. The three cars are engraved in full detail along with motoring paraphernalia including an oil jug, tire, lamp and wrenches around the base of the pen.
Limited to 500 pieces, the Great Race Gold pen is crafted in solid 950 Sterling Silver and fitted with an 18ct two-tone solid gold nib.
Refills: International Standard Cartridges or Converter (included) for bottle fill.
Condition Notes:
Marks on exterior and interior of box. Pen in very good condition. No paperwork.
